How Can I Have a Relationship with Jesus?

According to the Bible, all of us have done things, said things, and thought things that we know are wrong. And those wrongs separate us from God, who is completely holy.

In order to make it possible for us to have a relationship with His Father in heaven, Jesus came to die in our place, and His death on the cross paid the penalty for all the wrongs we have done.

Much of this is captured in the Bible’s most familiar verse, John 3:16:

“For God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.” (NLT)

In summary, that is how much the Father loves you—so much that He gave His Son to bring you to Himself.  If you have a desire to respond to that love, please follow that desire. The Bible gives us reason to believe that this is the urging of the Holy Spirit upon your life drawing you to God. Don’t ignore it. Instead, pray. Simply talk to God. In your own words . . .

  • Tell Him you believe in Him, that you believe He really does love you and wants a relationship with you.
  • Tell Him you recognize the wrong you have done, but believe that the payment Jesus Christ made by dying on the cross brings you forgiveness.
  • Then say thank you for your new life with Him.

It’s that simple. Once you have had a conversation like this with the God of the universe, you have turned your mind and heart toward Him. As you keep looking in His direction, learning as you go, He will draw you closer and closer to Himself and, over time, you will find yourself changing in ways you never dreamed possible.

Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” (Acts 2:21)
