John S. Feinberg, Ph.D. Legacy Professor
Dr. John S. Feinberg is Department Chair and Professor of Biblical and Systematic Theology at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in Deerfield, IL, where he has taught since 1983. He received his B.A. from the University of California, an M.Div. from Talbot Theological Seminary, a Th.M. from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, and a M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Chicago. He also did postgraduate work at the University of Iowa.
At Trinity Evangelical Divinity School (1983–present), Dr. Feinberg has combined classroom teaching with extensive academic research. An expert in topics such as evil and suffering, ethics, and apologetics, Dr. Feinberg’s has influenced thousands of future pastors and church leaders while serving his colleagues as the Chairman of the Biblical and Systematic Theology Department since 1985. Prior to his work at Trinity, Dr. Feinberg taught at Liberty Baptist Seminary and College (1981–1983) and Western Conservative Baptist Seminary (1976–1981). He has also been a visiting professor at Bethel Theological Seminary and a guest lecturer at numerous schools across the United States as well. Internationally, he has been a visiting professor in Germany and Italy and has been an Adjunct Professor at the well-known Tyndale Theological Seminary in the Netherlands since 1985. His teaching career began in 1969, when he was an Instructor in Doctrine for two years at the Los Angeles Bible Training School in Compton, California.
In addition to teaching, Dr. Feinberg is an ordained minister (1971) who frequently preaches at local churches and has served in various pulpit supply roles in California, Idaho, Illinois, Oregon, and Wisconsin. From 1974–1976, he was the Pastor of the Elmwood Park Bible Church in Illinois after completing missionary work in Los Angeles (1970–1971) and serving on Staff for the American Board of Missions to the Jews, Inc. (1970–1974). He is a member of the Evangelical Theological Society (served a term on the National Membership Committee during the mid-1980s) who regularly presents ETS regional and national conferences, the American Academy of Religion, and the Society of Biblical Literature. He has also served extensively in the Evangelical Philosophical Society acting as both President and Vice-President. In addition, he has been a theological consultant for the academic division of Crossway Books since 1985.
A passionate writer, Dr. Feinberg has published articles in various journals in both Europe and North America including submissions to the Evangelical Theological Journal, Trinity Journal, and Westminster Theological Journal. He is the author and editor of several books including Ethics for a Brave New World, Deceived by God? A Journey Through Suffering, and The Many Faces of Evil. His latest work is Where Is God?: A Personal Story of Finding God in Grief and Suffering. He is the general editor of Crossway’s Foundations of Evangelical Theology series.
