Glenn Smith, D.Min.
Dr. Glenn Smith is the Executive Director of Christian Direction in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, where he has served since 1983. He received a B.A. from the University of Michigan in French Literature and Linguistics, a B.A. and M.A. from the Université d’Ottawa in Patristics, and a D.Min. from Northern Baptist Theological Seminary. He also has a D.Hon from the Union des Universities Privées d’Haïti.
At Christian Direction, Dr. Smith works to promote the ministry’s multifaceted commitment to spiritual transformation in the Francophone world, while focusing on relationship building in multicultural, urban settings. Dr. Smith has also been a professor at various schools throughout Canada. For 21 years he served as a professor of Urban Ministry and Patristic Studies at the Faculté Théologique Évangélique in Montreal (1984–2004), and for an additional 24 years as a part-time professor of Urban Ministry and Spirituality at the École de Théologie Évangélique de Montréal (1984–2007). He has also taught courses at the Farel Institute in Québec, McGill University, Bakke Graduate University, and the Institut des Études Bibliques in British Columbia. In the last few years he has been a professor at the Institut de Théologie pour la Francophonie. He has also been a regular visiting professor at the Université Chrétienne du Nord d’Haïti in Limbé, Haiti, since 1992 and occasionally teaches at schools in Africa and Europe.
In addition to his current position, Dr. Smith has been involved in pastoral ministry in Montreal for over 20 years. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the Canadian Council of Christian Charities and then served as its chairperson from 1990–1992. Furthermore, Dr. Smith was a member of the Board of Directors of World Vision and is currently a member of the Board of Directors for InterVarsity Christian Fellowship of Canada. He also spent more than a decade on staff with Campus Crusade for Christ serving as both Regional and National Director and actively discipling students at Carelton University, the University of Ottawa, and the University of Western Ontario. He is also the senior associate for urban mission for the Lausanne Committee on World Evangelization.
Dr. Smith has authored numerous articles on contextualization, church planting, and urban ministry in educational and missiological journals and magazines. He authored the book Following Jesus: God Invites Us into Transforming Discipleship, which has been published in English, French, and Spanish; and he co-authored the books Espoir pour la ville, Dieu dans la cité (Hope for the City, God in the City) and L’histoire du protestantisme au Québec depuis 1960 (The History of Protestantism in Quebec Since 1960). He has also been the editor of three additional books including The Gospel and Urbanization now in its 5th edition and is the editor of the periodical The Gospel and Urbanization.
